About Medina, WA
Medina is primarily a residential city located in Eastside, King County, Washington. The city is located on a peninsula in Lake Washington, on the opposite coast from Seattle, and is bounded on the east by Clyde Hill and Hunts Point and on all other sides by water. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,969 people. Bill Gates, the billionaire, has properties in Medina, as do a number of Microsoft executives and other Gates acquaintances.
Medina has always been a leader in urban tree codes, having been designated as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2006. Since 1972, the City of Medina has codified the value that trees add to a community, and the Tree Code rules have been updated on a regular basis over the years. Significant changes in 2000, 2003, and 2006 have enhanced the code to the point where it is now one of the most comprehensive in the region. The present code (2006 version) protects huge trees and imposes severe penalties on their removal.
The Planning Commission was asked by the City Council in 2011 to revise the city’s existing tree code. Divided into two phases, the Planning Commission introduced Phase I before Council in 2014, where it was signed into law. Since then, Phase II improvements have been implemented with extensive community involvement and participation, as well as input from an ad hoc tree group, the Planning Commission, and City Council. The revised code is expected to be adopted in mid-2015.
