About Newcastle, Washington
Newcastle is a city in King County, Washington, that is located on the east side of the state. At the 2010 census, the population was 10,380, with an expected population of 12,292 in 2019.
Despite the fact that Newcastle did not become a city until 1994, it has been a significant colony and town since the late 1800s and has played a significant part in the development of Seattle and the surrounding region. Newcastle was one of the early coal mining towns in the region, and its train connection to Seattle was the county’s first. Timber was also important in Newcastle’s early history. Coal carried by train from Newcastle’s mines to Seattle spurred Seattle’s growth and attracted railways, including the Great Northern Railway.
Newcastle was not always the name of the town. Newcastle, a former mining town, was long gone and all but forgotten when suburban expansion arrived in the 1960s. The neighbourhood was thereafter dubbed Newport Hills.
There was a campaign in the early 1990s to incorporate as a new city. However, some residents objected, believing that the new city would be too small to be viable, while others worried that the city council would be swayed by the hilltop golf course. From the Issaquah Alps to Lake Washington, Coal Creek runs through the city.
Newcastle is bounded by Bellevue to the north, Renton to the south, unincorporated territory on Cougar Mountain to the east, and Lake Washington to the west. Five parcels of Newport Hills chose to annex themselves to Bellevue in 1993. (wikipedia)
